If this sounds like your hip
Putting on your socks or shoes is hard work.
Getting in or out of the car makes your groin hurt.
Lying on your side at night presses on a sore spot.
Your hip clicks or catches when you lift your leg.
The first few steps after sitting feel stiff.
A long walk around the mall leaves your hip aching.

What keeps hip pain going
With every step, you stand on one leg for a moment. The muscles on the side of your buttock keep your pelvis level while you do.
Long hours of sitting can leave those muscles weak and the front of your hip tight. Then your pelvis dips a little with each step, and the tendons on the side of the hip and the joint itself take the strain.
Think of a tent held up by ropes. When the ropes on one side go slack, the pole leans and rubs. Rest eases the rubbing, but the ropes are still slack.
So we build up those buttock muscles as part of treating your hip.

Inside a hip physiotherapy treatment session
Each session is 45 to 60 minutes and strictly one-to-one. Your first visit follows these four steps.

Assessment
Tell us where you feel it: the groin, the side of the hip or the buttock. We watch you walk, stand on one leg and squat. We also check your lower back, since back problems can be felt in the hip.

Hands-on treatment
Your physiotherapist uses hands-on treatment to ease the ache and help a stiff hip move further. The approach depends on what the assessment shows.

Exercise therapy
You start exercises for your buttock and thigh muscles in the same session. As you get stronger, you move on to our gym equipment with your physiotherapist beside you.

Your plan
Your plan lists what to do at home, and when you’ll move on to harder exercises.
What our hip patients say...
Eva helped tremendously with my frozen shoulder and tight hip flexors. Now to keep it up with the homework!
My wife had a hip muscle pain problem. Bryan Ng helped my wife with some exercises, and she is fully recovered within a week. Bryan did a good job in helping us to understand the hip muscle make-up, and he identified the exercises which help my wife's speedy recovery. Bryan is friendly and willing to share his physio knowledge. Thanks Bryan for your help.
Eva was great in handling my treatment. I felt very relieved after receiving my treatment. The exercises shown to me were of great help. Definitely will be following the exercises to relieve my hip pain. Great experience. Highly recommend this place!

Hip problems we treat
We treat a range of hip conditions, whether it’s an acute injury, long-term pain or recovery after surgery.
Hip arthritis
The smooth lining of the joint wears thin, so the hip gets stiff, especially in the morning. We keep it moving and build the muscles that support it.
Pain on the side of the hip
A sore spot on the outside of your hip (gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis), worse lying on that side or on stairs. We calm the tendons and strengthen your buttock muscles.
Hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement)
The ball and the rim of the socket pinch together when you bend deeply. We change how you move and strengthen the hip to ease the pinch.
Labral tear
A tear in the ring of cartilage around the socket, felt as a catch or click in the groin. We strengthen the muscles around the joint to steady it.
Snapping hip
A tendon flicks over the bone with a click as you move. We find which tendon it is and work on the tightness and weakness behind it.
Groin strain
A pulled muscle on the inside of the thigh, common in football and futsal. We rebuild strength before you sprint or change direction.
Rehab after hip replacement or fracture surgery
Getting up, walking and managing stairs again after surgery. We follow your surgeon’s limits at every stage.
Not sure which one you have?
Is it your hip or your back?
Pain in the buttock or down the leg can start in your lower back. Let the assessment sort it out.
Your hip physiotherapists
All our physiotherapists are certified and registered with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC).
Common questions people ask before hip treatment
How soon will my hip move better?
It depends on the cause and how long your hip has been stiff. Sore tendons on the side of the hip and a stiff, arthritic joint change at different speeds. Your physiotherapist will set out a plan after your first assessment.
Is my pain coming from my hip or my lower back?
It can be hard to tell on your own. Pain in the groin usually points to the hip joint, while pain in the buttock or down the back of the leg can come from the lower back. Your assessment checks both.
Do I need a doctor's referral or a scan first?
No. You can book with us directly, and your physiotherapist will assess your hip on your first visit. Bring any X-ray or MRI reports you already have. If your physiotherapist thinks a scan would help, they will tell you to see a doctor, who can arrange one.
Can I claim physiotherapy on insurance?
It depends on your insurer. With Great Eastern, we help with a direct claim, subject to eligibility. With other insurers, you pay first and we give you a physiotherapy report and receipt so you can claim. We don’t accept Guarantee Letters.
Can exercise help hip arthritis, or do I need surgery?
Exercise and physiotherapy are usually the first step for hip arthritis. If your hip is not improving, or daily life is getting very hard, your physiotherapist will suggest you see an orthopedic surgeon to talk about other options.
Can you help before and after a hip replacement?
Yes. Before surgery, we can work on your strength and walking. After it, we follow your surgeon’s limits, and we can speak with your surgeon about your rehab if you ask us to.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear loose clothes you can move in, such as a T-shirt and shorts. Bring any X-ray, MRI or ultrasound reports you have. If you don’t have any, that’s fine.
What language does your team speak?
Our team speaks English, Malay and Mandarin, and some of us also speak Hokkien, Hakka and Cantonese. If you’d prefer a language other than English, mention it in your WhatsApp message when you book.
