Scoliosis

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. Instead of the spine being straight when viewed from the front or back, it appears to have a C- or S-shaped curve.

There are different types of scoliosis, and they can be broadly categorized into three main groups based on their causes:

Idiopathic Scoliosis: This is the most common type of scoliosis and often has no identifiable cause. It typically develops during adolescence, when a child is growing rapidly, and it is not linked to birth defects or poor posture.

Congenital Scoliosis: Some individuals are born with abnormal vertebrae or other spinal abnormalities, which can lead to scoliosis.

Secondary or Acquired Scoliosis: Scoliosis can also develop later in life due to various factors, including injury, neuromuscular conditions (e.g., cerebral palsy) or degenerative changes in the spine. Being in a certain posture like slouching for too long can also mimic scoliosis appearance but physiotherapy and posture correction will usually correct these pains and appearance.)

FAQ

Is bracing necessary for scoliosis?

Bracing is considered a treatment option for scoliosis when the curvature is mild to moderate, typically less than 20-25 degrees, and the individual is still in the growth phase, especially during adolescence. The primary goals of bracing are to halt further progression of the curvature and avoid the need for surgery. For mild cases of scoliosis or individuals who have completed their growth, bracing may not be required.

Is surgery required for scoliosis?
Severe cases of scoliosis, usually with a curvature exceeding 45 degrees, may necessitate bracing or surgical intervention, depending on the individual’s age and specific circumstances. Surgery is not typically the initial treatment for scoliosis; it is reserved for specific cases where other treatments like bracing or physical therapy have proven ineffective or when the condition is extremely severe and poses risks to breathing or overall health.
Can scoliosis be cured?
In some mild cases of scoliosis, especially in children and adolescents, the condition may naturally resolve or improve as the individual grows. For moderate cases of scoliosis, treatment options such as bracing and physical therapy can help manage the condition and prevent further deterioration. Although these treatments may not completely eliminate the curvature, they can prevent it from worsening and enhance the individual’s quality of life. In severe cases of scoliosis, surgery can be performed to straighten and stabilize the spine. While surgery can provide substantial correction, it may not entirely eliminate the curvature, and some degree of curvature may persist.
Does scoliosis develop due to incorrect sitting posture or habitual standing patterns?
Scoliosis can have various causes, and it is not exclusively a condition present at birth or related to posture during sitting or standing habits.
